Many aspects of The Witcher 3 captured the hearts of players around the world, but the fast-paced card minigame Gwent has done so well for itself that it was reborn as a spinoff game. Now, one fan has created a striking tribute to The Witcher series by drawing a custom Gwent card depicting franchise protagonist Geralt of Rivia.

This isn’t the first time a fan of The Witcher has created a custom Gwent card, but it may be one of the most striking. A Redditor produced an incredibly detailed colored sketch of Geralt that wouldn’t be out of place as a panel in a graphic novel.

The card shows Geralt in his older and more worn design from The Witcher 3, complete with a practical ponytail and a neatly trimmed beard. He’s illustrated in the same combat-ready stance as the original Geralt card and is wearing a stern expression. Both his swords are visible, but one is worn on his back and the one in his hand has been mostly cut off by the limited space on the card. Also taken from the original Geralt card is the card quote, “If that’s what it takes to save the world, it’s better to let that world die.”

Like the original Geralt card, this version is a close combat Leader card with 15 strength–the highest the original game allows a card to have. The graphic novel-style art would make this card pop out if it was added to a Gwent deck, however, as most other Gwent cards use a significantly more realistic art style. This different visual approach may make it easier for fans to see the details of Geralt’s scars and face, as the original card’s deep shadows conceal some of Geralt’s features. The price is that the custom Geralt card lacks the near-photorealism of the original and the shading and detail work are both a bit clumsier.

As of writing, it appears that fans of The Witcher noticed the flaws in this portrayal of Geralt, but are still tentatively in favor of the custom card design. One user gave the creator some advice about the proportions of Geralt’s right hand, while another commented on the alignment of the arrows Gwent uses as quotation marks. A third user simply declared that they loved the image. A fourth suggested that the infamous “lesser evil” quote would have been a better choice.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is now available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, as well as iOS and Android Devices.
