The Witcher, a popular fantasy drama on Netflix, will soon return to our screens with fresh episodes. The third season of the Henry Cavill-starring series has officially been ordered by the streaming behemoth, with a promise that it will continue the exploits of Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia, the series’ eponymous Witcher.
Let’s look at what we know about season 3 of The Witcher as production on the next season is about to start. Who from the original cast is coming back, and will there be any new ones? What will the story involve? When will the new season be available? What else should fans know about The Witcher’s eagerly awaited return?
The Witcher Season 3 Release Date
The third season, which has just started filming, does not yet have a scheduled release date. Release dates for the first and second seasons were December 2019 and December 2021, respectively. Viewers could anticipate the third season to launch on Netflix around December 2023 if that schedule is kept up. Season two’s filming, however, was hampered by a number of COVID-related problems and set shutdowns. It’s feasible that season three will be released considerably sooner if it does not encounter these similar difficulties.
The Witcher Season 3 Cast
There hasn’t been much information disclosed about the third season’s cast as of this writing. The logline, however, gives a hint as to which characters the audience can anticipate. As the main character, Henry Cavill’s Geralt will return, along with Freya Allen’s Princess Ciri and Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer.
Along with these three, notable stars of the first two seasons included, among many other supporting and secondary characters, Eamon Farren as army commander Cahir, Joey Batey as travelling bard Jaskier, Anna Schaffer as sorceress Triss Marigold, Mahesh Jadu as sorcerer Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, and Kim Bodnia as Vesemir, the mentor of Geralt. More cast announcements will probably come as we move closer to the release date, so audiences will have to wait and see.
The Witcher Season 3 Plot
The Witcher is based on a series of Andrezj Sapkowski’s adventure fantasy books of the same name. The series was originally intended to be a solo film, but Netflix executives ultimately decided to turn it into a series in order to more thoroughly explore the worlds. The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, the first two books in the series, served as the inspiration for the first season of the show. Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt, the third and fourth books in the series, served as the inspiration for the second season. We can infer that the third season will adapt content from the series’ remaining volumes even if it hasn’t been made clear how it will relate to the novels.
Additional Information About The Witcher Season 3
Viewers can pass the time until the third season, despite the probable length of the wait, with the new spin-off projects currently in development. The animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which was made by Netflix and focused on the life of Geralt’s tutor Vesemir, was released in August 2021. The Witcher: Blood Origin, a planned prequel miniseries that focuses on the invention of the first Witcher, is set 1,200 years before the main series. The prequel, which will include Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, and Michelle Yeoh in the key roles, will probably be released in 2022.
Netflix is eager to grow The Witcher as much as possible because it is clearly on its way to becoming the next major fantasy TV property. All that viewers can do for the time being is wait and watch if the third season measures up to the enormous expectations that surround this constantly expanding brand.
