It seems that Pokemon crossovers truly have no limits. As one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world today, Pokemon crossovers, tie-ins and tributes still flood social media, with even some games looking to change up the Pokemon formula such as Palworld, a game which is described by many as a Pokemon with guns game. The cutesy style of Pokemon has been used many times over the years for new games giving the original formula a twist, or giving existing games the traditional Pokemon style.
New gaming sensation Wordle is the latest game to be hit with a Pokemon-themed version. Wordle has taken the internet by storm, with a daily word that people have a limited amount of guesses to get right. With feedback given after each of a player’s six guesses, a keen-eyed Wordle enthusiast can manage to figure out the word after a few tries. Given the popularity of the game, many are now coming up with strategies for Wordle to get the daily word as quickly as possible.
Of course, with any incredibly popular title, there’s likely going to be a Pokemon tie-in or crossover at some point. Pokemon Smile even created a crossover between the huge gaming franchise and tooth brushing. For Wordle though, the Pokemon-themed version is called Squirdle, and it’s quite a creative version of the viral game. Instead of just making players guess the names of Pokemon, similarly to Wordle, players of Squirdle must guess a specific Pokemon.
There are a few ways to play Squirdle. A player can choose the traditional, daily version where they must correctly guess one of the current 898 Pokemon, with feedback given on whether a player correctly guess the generation of the Pokemon, its type, its height and weight. There’s a mode which allows the player to just guess Pokemon at random without following the daily routine, and for those that haven’t managed to keep up with the staggering amount of Pokemon, there’s a version just looking at the Generation 1 Pokemon.
By focusing on other factors besides the letters making up the name of a Pokemon, Squirdle is a fairly creative clone of Wordle, allowing for players of the latter to experience a new guessing game requiring equal measures of strategy and luck. So far, Wordle proves to be popular enough to stand alone though, with it becoming such a sensation that the New York Times purchased the game, making fans somewhat nervous for its future.
Wordle is available for any browser.
