As Wordle has exploded in popularity over the past few months, the number of similar games taking a page out of the popular word game’s book has similarly ballooned with many similar ideas bringing their own spin to the daily word puzzles. Games like Lewdle have looked to spice up the word pool available in the game while other spinoffs like Octordle and Quardle have taken different approaches by tasking players with guessing multiple words in one game. Now, the newest clone combines the word puzzles with one of gaming’s most popular franchises, but not for the first time.

Wordle has been a social media sensation since the game rose to popularity early on in 2022 with the addition of sharing features for the game. The simplistic daily word game has inspired plenty of passionate fans to create their own Wordle clone to ride the game’s surge of popularity. Pokemon, in particular, has seen its own spinoff of Wordle with the aptly-named Squirdle featuring any of Pokemon’s 898 creatures from the franchise’s history. Now, the newest Pokemon-themed spinoff sporting a similar name has added a new piece of flavor in keeping with the franchise that inspired it.

Similar to its fellow Pokemon guessing game, the newly-released Sqwordle created by Nathan Fretz, going by the Reddit username of thecrumpking, tasks players with guessing from Pokemon’s original Kanto roster of 151 creatures by associating the selections with different moves. Each guess will narrow down the pool of selections as the Pokemon will use a new move from its available learnset with the game graying out Pokemon that no longer fit the criteria. The game also features multiple difficulties allowing players to tune their experience for a greater challenge.

The functionality of the Pokemon-themed Wordle clone plays similarly to the previously-released Squirdle with tasking players to guess Pokemon based on statistics like height and weight while the addition of lower difficulties with move-based hints makes the challenge easier for players with less intimate knowledge of detailed Pokemon stats. The two games are among the most recent of a long line of Wordle clones released since the game rose to popularity.

The newest Pokemon word games come at a time of major reveals for the long-running monster-catching franchise. The latest Pokemon Presents broadcast officially unveiled Pokemon’s next generation with the announcement of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet alongside several other smaller reveals for ongoing games, including an update for Pokemon Legends: Arceus and new Pokemon coming to Pokemon GO. A new Pokemon spinoff of Wordle should be a nice treat for Pokemon fans who can’t get enough of the daily word game.

Wordle is available on any web browser.
