The original Santa Clause film trilogy starring Tim Allen makes up some of the most beloved and recognizable holiday movies today. However, the series has not received a new film since 2006 with the release of The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Now, the franchise will be coming back to families around the world, as a new The Santa Clause series with Tim Allen and his Last Man Standing team is in the works for Disney Plus.

Allen broke out in the 1990s for his leading role in Home Improvement and is most famous for his recurring voice role as Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear. He has worked extensively with Disney and other Hollywood studios, as the comedian has also starred in films like The Shaggy Dog, Christmas With The Kranks, and Galaxy Quest. Allen’s modern sitcom Last Man Standing ran on ABC (and later on FOX) for nine seasons before ending last year.

The Santa Clause original limited series by 20th Television will be executive produced by Last Man Standing creator Jack Burditt, as well as writer Kevin Hench and Tim Allen’s managers, Richard Baker and Rick Messina. The series will follow Allen’s character Scott Calvin as he realizes he’s beginning to “lose his step” as Santa Claus and begins searching for a suitable replacement, all while he prepares his family for life outside the North Pole. The series has not been given a release date at this time, nor have any other cast members (new or returning) been announced.

The Santa Clause won’t be the only series coming soon to Disney Plus. More superhero series by Marvel Studios such as Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and Secret Invasion will be released, as well as Star Wars series like Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi. In addition, Disney is working on a slew of animated series including Baymax, Cars on the Road, and Pixar’s Win or Lose, and Lucasfilm is working on a series based on the 1988 fantasy film Willow.

The Santa Clause will be an exciting new addition to a slate of Holiday projects from Disney that includes The Nightmare Before Christmas, Noelle, and Home Sweet Home Alone. It will also be exciting for audiences to see Allen working with Disney again for the first time since voicing Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 4. Here’s hoping The Santa Clause can provide Christmas spirit to audiences of all ages when it releases in the near future.
