Sony’s Uncharted settles in the coveted top spot at the domestic box office, earning $51 million over the holiday weekend, with an estimated $44.1 million generated over its first three days in theaters. The video game adaptation is the first film for Tom Holland after the wave of incredible success accumulated from Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended the weekend seated in third.

Uncharted debuted internationally last week before appearing in domestic theaters, potentially to avoid any distractions the Super Bowl may have presented. The film generated $21.5 million overseas, which created early speculation that the project could see a $40 million total domestically by the end of the holiday weekend. Instead, the film overperformed its projections and brought in solid numbers over its first few days. Uncharted opened this past Friday with a $15.4 million total, which increased by the end of Saturday as the film brought in $16.3 million. Sunday’s $12.5 million total saw things slow down a bit, which looks to repeat itself heading into Monday, as the film is projected to earn $6.8 million.

The popular PlayStation franchise adaptation has received mixed reviews across the board. The film obtained a 39% rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on critics’ opinions, which differs significantly from the audience score on the platform, which sits at 90%. However, the pessimism surrounding the project from certain critics didn’t discourage audiences from interacting with the treasure hunting adventure, eager to see Holland take center stage in a role different from the one in Spider-Man: No Way Home. As a result, Uncharted has generated roughly $139 million worldwide, accumulating $88 million internationally, alongside its domestic earnings.

Coming in second place this holiday weekend is Channing Tatum’s Dog, which ended its opening run with an $18 million total. The film was a personal project for Tatum and marked the actor/directors return to the big screen after a four-year hiatus. The film opened this past Friday, earning $5 million, which increased slightly throughout Saturday, as the film ended the night with a $5.6 million total. However, Sunday’s $4.4 million total saw things regress from the previous two days, which looks to continue throughout Monday, with the film projected to take home $2.9 million. Despite its minuscule performance, the film received a better reception than Uncharted, earning a 77% from Rotten Tomatoes and an A- from CinemaScore.

Rounding out the top three is a familiar box office resident, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film ended the weekend with an $8.8 million total, bringing its ten-week accumulation to $771.7 million. No Way Home recently passed Avatar as the third highest-grossing film ever domestically. The Marvel Studios and Sony film is still a significant distance behind Avengers: Endgame, which currently sits in second, but there’s no telling where the web-slinging hero will land if it continues along the steady path it’s now on at thebox office. Death on the Nile dropped tremendously, falling from first to fourth in the domestic box office standings. The film generated an opening weekend total of $28.6 million last week but followed that performance with a disappointing $7.18 million holiday weekend total.

Uncharted is currently the fourth highest-grossing domestic film in 2022, sitting behind the groundbreaking Spider-Man: No Way Home, Scream, and Sing 2. The video game adaptation and Scream are the two highest-grossing films to be released this calendar year, which look to be challenged as The Batman approaches in early March. In addition, Uncharted will make its Chinese debut on March 14th, which should help bolster its international revenue if received well at China’s box office.

Uncharted is currently playing in theaters.
