New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on December 07, 2022) follows:

Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has been experimenting with new ideas. Some have been positively received by its users, such as Twitter Blue, while others including the attempt to promote ‘free speech‘ have not gone down well.

The most recent change that appears to be perplexing users is the modification to the video player.

Twitter autoplay not working

According to reports, several Twitter users say that the autoplay function is not working ever since a new update to the video player (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9).

When users open a video to watch it, they have to manually press the button to play it. Previously, when they opened a video, it started playing immediately.

This is separate from manually disabling the autoplay feature. Unlike what’s happening, disabling autoplay in Twitter settings only affects video playback when scrolling through your feed.

A new Twitter update appears to be the cause of this problem since videos do not autoplay even when connected to Wi-Fi network with autoplay enabled. As a result, you must hit the play button twice to watch a video.

Double tapping on a video no longer rewinds or forwards it

Autoplay isn’t the only issue with the new Twitter video player; users have also reported problems with the rewind and forward functions, which have been tweaked (1,2,3,4,5,6,7).

It is no longer possible to forward or rewind a video by double-tapping on either side. Instead, doing so results in liking or favoriting the tweet.

This is a pretty common feature that most video players, including YouTube, provide. As a result, its removal has enraged users because it was a really useful one.

We hope Elon Musk takes this user feedback into account and restores the old video player’s functionality.

That said, we will keep an eye on the latest developments in each of these cases and update this article as soon as anything important comes to our attention.

Update 1 (December 12)

12:44 pm (IST): It seems that Twitter app returned to the classic behavior where double tapping on the right or left edge of a video allows forward or rewind. We could test it too and it’s working as before.
