Fans of The Division series are in luck, as Ubisoft seems determined to keep building upon the successful military shooter. Today, the publisher made several announcements regarding in-progress projects tied to The Division brand, all of which have been outlined on a loose timeline.
The biggest announcement in the Ubisoft update was The Division Heartland, a free-to-play game from developer Red Storm Studio. The developer has worked on several Tom Clancy games while also assisting with the first two The Division titles, though details on the project are scarce. However, it is confirmed to tell a standalone story that does not rely on the first two games, with a new setting also highlighted. Alongside the confirmed platforms of console, cloud, and PC, a release window of 2021-2022 was mentioned.
Outside of this sequel and The Division 2’s new content, which is confirmed for 2021, the other projects do not have a release date attached. This will surely leave fans scratching their heads over the placement of the novel, film, and mobile game on the timeline. However, with the context from The Division Heartland’s release window, this dateless timeline begins to become a bit clearer. As such, fans can estimate some year-based release windows for each of the projects on the timeline.
The image begins with the original The Division game, with the popular 2016 game starting the timeline. The second entry is 2019’s The Division 2, with the 2020 Warlord of New York expansion coming next. From there, only new content is seen, beginning with the free-to-play game The Division Heartland. While Ubisoft has given itself some room for a 2022 launch, 2021 makes more sense given the timeline. This is because The Division 2’s new content is the next item in the lineup, with Ubisoft confirming that it is planned to release in late 2021. It will supposedly include a new game mode and emphasize build variety.
The next position is taken up by The Division Mobile, and while no details have been shared on the project apart from the fact it is coming, a 2022 date seems likely. With The Division 2’s content coming at the end of 2021, the start of 2022 seems like a fine place for the mobile title. This only leaves the newly announced novel and previously announced Netflix movie without a window. In the case of the former, a mid-2022 release seems probable given the timeline. For the Jake Gyllenhaal-led The Division film, a late 2022 launch would seem like a solid bet based on this rough outline.
Still, this is purely speculation, with only the dates for The Division Heartland and The Division 2’s fresh content being official. With this timeline being intentionally vague, the content is subject to change, though it is nice to see fans of The Division getting some idea of where things are going with the series next.
