With the premiere of Tom Holland’s long-awaited Uncharted movie finally within a particularly grabby arm’s reach, curious audiences have slowly been warming up to the idea that, hey, maybe this decade-old project will actually release. So much is still unclear about the whole project. But one thing is for certain: it’s definitely a movie.
As fans continue to debate whether Uncharted will end up being a good video game movie or simply a video game movie, a pair of new images from the film have just been released. They seem to further the already prevailing notion that it will pretty closely mirror the vibe of the Uncharted games, up to and including main character Nathan Drake’s suave treasure hunter personality. Based on these pictures, the inspirations for Drake’s whole deal could probably not be more clear.
Coming from the latest issue of Total Film magazine, the new Uncharted images show off some fresh looks at Holland as Drake and a glimpse at Sophia Ali as fan-favorite character Chloe Frazer. The first shot looks pretty standard, with Holland and Ali hanging out in a cave with a torch doing cave stuff. But the other displays some cool confidence and a snazzy ride that both draw a rather clear picture of Drake’s ever-present James Bond-esque side.
Granted, while Bond tends to go for a nice sleek Aston Martin as his vehicle of choice, Holland’s Drake is seen here showing off an impressive smolder while piloting a sensible speed boat. Long-time fans of the Uncharted game series are likely familiar with the idea of Drake on a boat, for better or worse, so this definitely seems in character and on-brand for the upcoming film adaptation. Now if they add a picture of that same boat blowing up, then the trifecta will be complete.
The Uncharted movie has been touted as a mix between Indiana Jones and James Bond, and that idea seems to be expressed well in these images. All that’s missing is a hat, a whip, and a borderline unhealthy relationship with museums. Maybe a potential sequel could even involve some morally questionable depictions of indigenous people and a mine cart ride, just to keep things consistent.
Uncharted admittedly looks like a movie that isn’t exactly going to challenge people’s preconceptions or win any writing awards, but in all fairness, it doesn’t really need to be more than what it is. A fun, action-filled romp through tons of exciting set pieces with a charming protagonist is always a good time. In the end, sometimes that’s all a movie needs to be in order to be worth watching.
Uncharted will premiere in theaters on February 18th, 2022.
