The Uncharted movie is essentially a prequel to the game series. It takes some liberties with Nathan Drake’s story and the characters surrounding him, however, for a video game movie, it is fairly accurate. The movie begins with Nate as a bartender who is quickly recruited by Sully for a job.
Sully wants to find a lost treasure and he needs Nate’s skills to get a golden cross before someone else does. There are a few things that don’t make sense about the plot along with some lingering questions that could be answered in a sequel. Will there be one?
There will be spoilers for the Uncharted movie.
7 Why Didn’t Nate Go With Sam?
Sam gets kicked out of the orphanage at the beginning of the movie similar to the games. He tells Nate to wait for him but Sam never returns. All Nate got was a bunch of postcards sent throughout the years. The games are different in that Sam comes back a couple of years later.
For the Uncharted film and games, why didn’t Nate go with Sam? After all, he was the only family he had left. Nate should have insisted on coming, or Sam should have insisted on sticking with Nate. Either way, it doesn’t make too much sense. Also, Nate knows that Sam liked to play games with hidden messages. Why didn’t Nate at least try the fire trick earlier than he does in the film?
6 Finding The Various Ruins
Barcelona is an old city built on ruins on top of ruins. Nate, Sully, and Chloe eventually uncover a tomb beneath the city which could be reached alternatively via a drain grate. Sully couldn’t get the gate open barehanded but it wasn’t sealed.
Someone in Barcelona must have peered into that giant grate at some point. What’s even more unbelievable are the two ships they find at the end of the movie. There is a giant hole in the cave up top, so no person ever peered through that before? When it comes to exploring ruins, the film shares a lot with the games in terms of questionability.
5 Nathan Hiding The Coordinates
Sully tells Nate throughout Uncharted that Chloe can’t be trusted. Sully was right as, while in the underground of Barcelona, Chloe steals a map from Nate. Later on, they partner up again and things seem to be going okay.
Nate decides to put her trust to the test and leaves his uncovered clue on the table. This clue is a fake location and he puts the real coordinates in a bottle. That was clever of him, but why stick the real clue in a bottle when his pants pocket would have sufficed? It’s not a major plot problem, but Nate was more elaborate in his puzzles than he needed to be.
4 Sully’s Turn
Sully warns Nate of Chloe, but Sully was just as guilty of using Nate. Even when they find the pirate ship, Sully’s greed gets in the way. While Sully ultimately sacrifices his gold to kill Jo and save Nate, there is no coming out emotional moment between finding the gold and the helicopter rescue.
Sully didn’t seem to have an arc in the movie to make this change of heart believable. Nate doesn’t dramatically save Sully beforehand either. So, why did Sully do it?
3 How Did Sam Survive?
Sully and Chloe hide the truth about Sam from Nate through most of Uncharted. Eventually, Sully comes clean and admits he left Sam behind because it looked like Jo killed him. Sully didn’t think there was anything he could have done for Sam.
In the pirate ship fight, Jo even makes a comment to Nate about killing Sam. So, if Jo thinks she killed Sam then how is he alive and in prison? Maybe the person writing that last postcard isn’t Sam at all and is merely pretending to be him. If that’s the case then who is “S?”
2 Jo Braddock
There are a lot of questions concerning Jo Braddock. One, is she a replacement for Nadine Ross from the fourth game and spinoff? Jo commands a group of mercenaries and so does Nadine. They share similar builds as well. If this was supposed to be Nadine then why did the movie designers change her?
This could be a coincidence. What about Jo’s well-being? Is she alive at the end of the movie? It looks like a ship falls on Jo, but viewers aren’t shown a direct impact. She could very well have dived under the water quickly to avoid the brunt of the impact.
1 Who Do Nate And Sully See At The End?
The final stinger of Uncharted shows Sully sporting his iconic mustache and trusty revolver and Nate wearing a more familiar shirt. Upon exiting their double-cross, they bump into someone which brings shock to their eyes. This could be several people.
This scene looks like a direct clip from a sequel rather than a short fun little stinger. This could be someone new they had met in this sequel already. It could be Elena for example. It could also be Chloe or Jo. It could even be Sam. Hopefully, there is a sequel to this movie so fans get to know sooner rather than later.
