Elden Ring has a massive open world for players to explore, filled with secrets and hidden pathways. Sometimes these secrets are hidden behind Elden Ring’s illusory walls, but other times they are only accessible by falling off ledges at specific points. However, it can be tricky for Elden Ring players to figure out if a fall is going to kill them or not, which is why one supposed fall damage trick went viral, though fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
On Reddit, a user posted a video claiming to show a trick about how to determine if an Elden Ring fall will kill the player or not. The video claims to show how if an Elden Ring player attacks near a ledge, the animation will send them falling off if they’ll survive the fall, while an invisible wall will block them if the fall would kill them. The video has amassed over 40,000 upvotes, but Elden Ring players that try testing it for themselves may very well get killed for their efforts.
As pointed out by various users in the comment section, what’s happening in the clip is not Elden Ring letting players know if a ledge is high enough to kill them by fall damage. On the contrary, it’s simply something that is built into the game so players avoid accidentally falling off ledges. That’s not to say that they can’t fall off the cliffs on accident, and in fact it happens all the time, but it’s just a design quirk to make exploration a little less frustrating for the player and can apply to all ledges, regardless of height. Sometimes players may be saved from falling to their deaths accidentally, other times they’ll plummet to their doom.
With over 40,000 upvotes, it’s quite likely that this video may have sent some Elden Ring players to their deaths. Users that commented on the post pointed out how this effectively makes this post function like one of Elden Ring’s troll messages that tell people they can safely jump off a ledge, only for the fall to kill them.
Luckily, there is a legitimate way to figure out if players will die from fall damage in Elden Ring. Elden Ring rainbow stones can be thrown off ledges to clue players in on if the fall will be high enough to kill them. So while it’s interesting to note that the game will try to keep players from falling off ledges accidentally, players should stick with rainbow stones instead when trying to determine if falls will kill them or not.
Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
