Catwoman is one of the most iconic female characters and love interests of Bruce Wayne in the Batman universe. Her incredible femme fatale style and doing bad things for a good cause motive make her an unforgettable character. Catwoman has seen many live-action interpretations, however, she is now getting her own animated film under Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics.
The film will be called Catwoman: Hunted, clearly referring to the character’s animal activism. Even though no release date has been set yet, a full cast and crew have been announced as well as a premise for the movie. The film will center around a heist gone wrong. Catwoman will face multiple unforeseen forces including other villains, police, and Batwoman as she attempts to carry out her crime. There is no mention of when exactly in the Batman universe this film takes place or if Selina Kyle’s sometimes love interest Bruce Wayne will be making an appearance.
Directing the movie is accredited director and artist Shinsuke Terasawa (Akira, Mobile Suit Gundam). The film also has an impressive cast line up including Elizabeth Gillies (Victorious) starring as Catwoman and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Batwoman. Other notable mentions include: Steve Blum as Solomon Grundy, Zehra Fazal as Talia al Ghul & Nosferatu, Jonathan Banks as Black Mask, Keith David as Tobias Whale, and Jonathan Frakes as King Faraday & Boss Moxie, among others.
The cast list shows off an incredible list of some popular and lesser-known villains in the Batman universe, which should provide for an exciting film. The character list blends characters from older Batman universes like that of Batman: The Animated Series to videogames like the Batman: Arkham series. Even without a trailer, the film already seems to guarantee a level of chaos that will match up to Catwoman’s spy-like skills. Director Terasawa is known for his levels of action and suspense that should also add another exciting layer to the film.
With previous cinematic failures like Halle Berry’s 2004 live-action film Catwoman, the character is well overdue for a redemption film. Some of Catwoman’s best scenes are from animated Batman works like the eclectic Animated Series from the ’90s. Catwoman is another female character in the superhero realms that has been grossly oversexualized and this upcoming animated film promises a film that is purely a character study and an opportunity to see the character in her best work yet.
