Marvel Studios’ What If…? continues to explore tales from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they would be impacted if one detail was to be slightly modified. In its latest episode, the Disney Plus series takes a look at “What If… Thor Were an Only Child?” While the episode deals with his antics as the spoilt son of Odin, the 30 minutes of television take inspiration from an unlikely source.

As part of the latest What If…? episode, two extremely powerful heroes, Thor and Captain Marvel, are seen going up against each other. While one might expect this to be an epic fight (and sure enough it is), the way the fight scenes were stylized look straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Watching the two greats fight is similar to seeing the epic duo Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner in action.

It all begins when Thor turns into a party animal who comes to Earth to show off his “bad boy” ways after his father enters a state of Odinsleep. Without Loki in the picture, Thor is the polar opposite of his previous MCU version. He isn’t the responsible big brother anymore, but is instead the only Prince of the realm who completely lacks the wisdom that should come with the role.

Upon arriving on Earth, specifically in Las Vegas, Thor goes on to invite beings from the Nine Realms to the biggest party ever hosted. Jane Foster, who fans will see return in Thor: Love and Thunder, and Darcy Lewis, who are seen camping in the middle of a desert in the opening scene, are prepared to face aliens when they arrive at this party and are rather surprised to see Thor and his band of outlaws. Just like the MCU films though, Foster is immediately attracted towards Thor, and instead of trying to stop him, she joins the party.

However, S.H.I.E.L.D is not pleased and Maria Hill, who is acting director after Nick Fury is involved in an “accident,” decides to call on Captain Marvel to get the job done. This is when the fun begins because the two Avengers get in a fight, with each probably trying to prove that they are much stronger than the other.

For years, fans of the Marvel comics have pitted several heroes up against each other in hypothetical scenarios and debated over who would win. The MCU did put some of the members of the Avengers in opposing teams temporarily as part of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. One faction was led by Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, and the opposing team had Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, as their leader. Of course it all ended with them eventually reuniting and fighting against Thanos at the end of the Infinity Saga.

However, Captain Marvel and Thor are among some of the most powerful heroes in the comics, and at some point, fans would have imagined who would win if they were to go up against each other. One would assume that Thor would be the clear winner, with him being a god and having access to Asgardian powers. But, let’s not forget that Captain Marvel also has several superhuman traits and abilities, including super-strength, stamina, and the ability to fly.

The latest What If…? episode is a great service to fans as an epic fight breaks out between the two heroes, which is bound to get some cheers from the viewers. One can almost imagine people being divided into Team Captain Marvel and Team Thor, and offering support to their favorite hero from the sidelines. The entire scene is very well orchestrated and takes the heroes from fighting in Las Vegas, to Stonehenge, the Mojave Desert, and all the way to Siberia. However, the fight does end without a clear winner, though it is implied that if Captain Marvel were to exert her true strength, not only could she defeat Thor, but even destroy bits of the planet.

What’s great about the fight scene is that throughout the conflict, it seems like two cartoon characters are battling it out. It is produced in a slapstick style, complete with the right amount of “pows” and blowing dust, which almost resembles the battles in Looney Tunes. When Bugs Bunny is being hunted by his archnemesis Elmer Fudd, their brawls are equally entertaining to watch. The inspiration from classic cartoons also applies to the wide shots of planet Earth, where the names of countries are clearly visible, a stylistic choice that pulls this episode even closer to absurdist territory.

The seventh episode of What If…? follows a completely comic genre, and the frat party gone wrong offers 30 minutes of very entertaining television. The past few episodes of What If…? have been quite dark, with grim plots, and even lead to the deaths of several Avengers. The latest episode offers the perfect comic relief from the dark path that What If…? seemed to have taken in the previous few weeks.

Apart from the comic element, the fantastic fight scenes are very well animated, and the power that both heroes display is easier to portray in animation. A similar fight in live-action would require large amounts of CGI, stunt doubles, green screens, and stunt wires. One of the scenes shows the two heroes fighting while surrounded by very dark clouds, and each hero is then illustrated with lightning strikes. It’s a visually stunning scene to watch.

Another epic moment in the fight comes when Captain Marvel is able to withstand the power of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir without even flinching. This goes to show how powerful the hero truly is, similar to her comics counterpart. While there is no clear winner between the two heroes, the episode is a great one to watch for the sake of the competition, and bringing in the comic elements is the cherry on top.
